Proverbs 13, with my advice to my kids after the "~"s. The large font words are scripture, with the authority thereof. My comments you can take or leave. - Charlie
A wise child pays attention to what his father teaches him.
But anyone who makes fun of others doesn't listen to warnings.
~ Avoid making fun of others, pay attention to your father’s teaching.
The good things a man says benefit him.
But a liar loves to hurt others.
~Lying cannot help you, but if you lie then you love to hurt others. Say good things and help yourself.
Anyone who guards what he says guards his life.
But anyone who speaks without thinking will be destroyed.
~Bite your tongue rather than speak without thinking. Guard what you say or your tongue will bring you pain.
People who refuse to work want things and get nothing.
But the longings of people who work hard are completely satisfied.
~ Choose to work hard so you can be satisfied.
Those who do right hate what is false.
But those who do wrong bring shame and dishonor.
~ Choose to hate what is false. If you do wrong then you love what is false and you’ll be ashamed and dishonored.
Doing right guards those who are honest.
But evil destroys those who are sinful.
Some people pretend to be rich but have nothing.
Others pretend to be poor but have great wealth.
~ You can never tell by looking at someone whether they are rich or poor.
A man who is rich might have to pay to save his life.
But a poor person is not in danger of that.
The lights of godly people shine brightly.
But the lamps of sinners are blown out.
Pride only leads to arguing.
But those who take advice are wise.
~ Choose not to argue but rather choose to listen.
Money that is gained in the wrong way disappears.
But money that is gathered little by little grows.
~ Don’t try to get rich by stealing or lying. Build your wealth gradually and it will grow.
Hope that is put off makes one sick at heart.
But a longing that is met is like a tree of life.
~ When you reach a hoped-for goal, then celebrate! Don’t put off the joy any longer. Celebrate and know the life from that “tree of life” in your heart.
Anyone who hates what he is taught will pay for it later.
But a person who respects a command will be rewarded.
~ So when you DO what you are told to do, you will be rewarded. If you act grouchy and resentful and you have a bad attitude and you argue, then you will pay for it later.
The teaching of wise people is like a fountain that gives life.
It turns those who listen to it away from the jaws of death.
~ Seek out the water of life, listen to the teaching of the wise.
Good understanding wins favor.
But the way of liars doesn't last.
~ So if you have good understanding, then you won’t lie, and you’ll win favor.
Wise people act in keeping with the knowledge they have.
But foolish people show how foolish they are.
~ACT! USE what you know. If you don’t act, then you also become a fool. All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to stand by and do nothing.
An evil messenger gets into trouble.
But a messenger who is trusted brings healing.
Those who turn away from their training become poor and ashamed.
But those who accept warnings are honored.
~So if you turn away from what you’re taught you turn toward poverty and shame.
A longing that is met is like something that tastes sweet.
But foolish people hate to turn away from evil.
~So you need to turn away from evil in order to have your longings met and to savor it.
Anyone who walks with wise people grows wise.
But a companion of foolish people suffers harm.
~Choose who you will walk with based on what you want to happen to you.
Hard times chase those who are sinful.
But success is the reward of those who do right.
~Choose whether you want to have success or hard times.
A good person leaves what he owns to his children and grandchildren.
But a sinner's wealth is stored up for those who do right.
~Choose where you want your things to end up, either with your kids, or with someone else.
The fields of poor people might produce a lot of food.
But those who beat them down destroy it all.
~ Avoid poverty! Work hard to avoid it. Evildoers beat down the poor.
Those who don't correct their children hate them.
But those who love them are careful to train them.
~ Mom and Dad don’t give you advice because it is good for them, they give you advice because they are trying to train you and because they want what’s best for you. Mom and Dad know better than you do as kids, and are responsible to teach you what’s right.
